In keeping with our environmental ethics, Self Drive Adventures requires a short but compulsory driving course to be taken by all our clients.

This entails a detailed demonstration of all vehicle equipment including:
• the handling of a high lift jack in all conditions (Toyota Land Cruiser only)
• use of all tools
• unfolding and repacking of the awning (Toyota Land Cruiser only)
• unfolding and repacking of roof top tent (Toyota Land Cruiser only)
• assembling and repacking all gas equipment (Toyota Land Cruiser only)
• usage of GPS and satellite telephone (Toyota Land Cruiser only)
• demonstration of how and where all items are packed

The actual driving course is split into two sections:
Use of equipment in a breakdown; what to do and what not to do:
• correct procedures when changing a tyre
• correct usage of towrope and snatch rope
• what to do when the vehicle is bogged down in sand, mud, water

Driving on the roads in Botswana and its wildlife parks:
• road conditions in Botswana and speed limits
• using four-wheel drive and the correct application of gearing
• ascents and descents
• crossing water
• driving in sand and mud
• tyre pressures in different conditions
• basic vehicle maintenance in the bush
• ethics in game parks
• driver behaviour around wild animals
• all aspects of safety
• respect for fellow tourists
